InterCheck Technology by Sophos Plc
As the number of viruses continues to grow and anti-virus software becomes
increasingly more memory and processor-intensive, it makes sense to perform
virus scanning on the server rather than on the DOS workstation.
InterCheck is a new, innovative concept for true client-server virus detection,
which enables the entire network to be protected in one simple process.
InterCheck technology
The InterCheck client maintains a list of authorised programs for each
workstation. Any attempt to access an unknown program causes the client to
request authorisation from the server. The authorisation is given only after
the server has verified that the program is clean. This process is automatic
and does not require any user intervention.
Once a program has been authorised it can be used without further checking,
unless it is modified. Working as a pair of communicating processes, the
InterCheck client and server ensure complete virus protection for your network.
The InterCheck client software runs under DOS, Windows, Windows 95, Windows for
Workgroups or on the Macintosh. The InterCheck server functionality is provided
by SWEEP for NetWare, SWEEP for OS/2, SWEEP for Windows NT, VSWEEP for OpenVMS,
or by DOS SWEEP, as appropriate.
Ease of use
One of the major expenses of using virus scanners has always been the work
involved in updating them on a regular basis. The InterCheck client requires no
updating: once installed, it is administered automatically, providing enforced
scanning of unknown disks and executables.
The server is updated monthly with a new copy of SWEEP.
Installation of InterCheck can usually be automated across the network. In most
cases there is no need to configure individual workstations.
Future-proof
It is inevitable that scanners will become more complex and bigger as the
number of viruses grows. File servers do not suffer from the memory
restrictions that plague DOS PCs. Placing the scanner on the server
future-proofs your anti-virus strategy.
Stand-alone PCs
InterCheck can be installed on standalone PCs and portables to provide
continued protection when they are not connected to the network.
Total protection
InterCheck monitors access to all executable files and will not allow an
infected file to be run, copied or renamed.
The majority of virus infections are caused by boot sector viruses introduced
on floppy disks. The InterCheck client automatically checks the boot sector of
any new floppy disk on the first access of that disk. Ctrl-Alt-Del is
intercepted and bootstrapping from the floppy disk is not allowed to proceed
until the boot sector has been checked.
